What are the best 401(k) company match programs?
Are you working at Visa, Southwest or Vimeo? Then lucky you, because these companies are among the most generous ones when it comes to 401(k) match, making it easy for you to build wealth for your future.
But even if you don’t work at such a generous firm, don’t fret and just read on - because most of us don’t.
How much 401(k) match is typical?
401(k) employer match is free money that your employer gives you for your future on top of your salary, so it’s really important to make sure you get it. And even though offering a matching program is not mandatory for employers, over half of them offer it today in order to compete for and retain the best people.
Generally, the terms of a matching program are measured by two percentages:
- The match rate - this is how much is your employer contributing for every dollar you contribute (for example, they add 50 Cents for every dollar you contribute)
- The match limit - this the amount of money you can contribute, up to which your employer will still match. It is usually a percentage of your salary (for example 6%), but it can also be a fixed dollar amount
In addition, there are a few other relevant terms, namely vesting (how long you have to work at the company until the employer match is truly yours) and sometimes you have to have worked at your company for a period of time (for example one year) in order to start receiving your match.
The most standard matching terms across the US are that an employer contributes 50 Cents for every dollar you contribute to your 401(k) plan, and up to a maximum of 6% of your salary.
The most generous 401(k) matches
But some employers go above and beyond and offer way more than that. We looked at 7 of the most generous employers in 2022 when it comes to 401(k) match.
The first company on our list is a well-known airline. Not only are they known to treat their customers well, but they do the same for their employees. If you work for Southwest, you can contribute up to 9.3% of your salary to your 401(k) plan and your money WILL BE DOUBLED that money for you subject to vesting requirements - courtesy of the red, yellow and blue airline.
The USAA, a large auto insurance and financial services company, is almost equally generous. You can contribute up to 8% of your salary and the company will match your contributions dollar for dollar. However, it is important to understand the details: there is a 3-year vesting period, meaning that you have to stay at the company for 3 more years after you receive your match in order to fully own it. If you leave before, you may have to return some of it, but of course your own contributions will always stay yours.
Intuit, the financial software company, even goes beyond a dollar-for-dollar match. They will contribute $ 1.25 for every dollar you contribute to your 401(k), up to 6% of your annual salary or up to $ 10,000 contribution, whichever you hit first. A very generous offer, but with the financial expertise this company has, we’re sure that they’ve done the math on this one!
Speaking of going beyond 100% match - Visa takes it even further. The credit card company will put TWO whole dollars into your 401(k) for every dollar you contribute. Yes, you heard that right, they instantly triple your contribution, up to a limit of 5% of your gross salary, that is.
Microsoft has a very generous offer as well, but they’ve taken a slightly different approach. The software giant founded by Bill Gates will match your contributions only with 50 Cents per dollar, but they will match all the way up to the maximum contribution that is legally allowed by the IRS, which is $ 20,500 in 2022. So if you contribute this amount to your 401(k), you will get an extra $ 10,250 from Microsoft.
Vimeo, the video sharing and hosting platform, also tries to attract the best employees with a generous match. The company will match your contribution dollar-for-dollar up to 10% of your salary, or $ 10,000, whichever comes first.
Walmart is known for low prices, but they’re everything but cheap on their own employees. The company will match 100% of their employees’ 401(k) contributions up to a limit of 6% of their annual salary.
